Come aboard this May for a rare opportunity to spend some time with author John Straley while sailing around Washington's most enchanted islands.  John will read from his new novel which is partially set on small vessels headed up the Inside Passage to Alaska.  He'll talk about his research and writing as well as crime stories he's gathered from working as a Private Investigator along the waterfront of southeastern Alaska.  This 2-day adventure explores the San Juan Islands aboard the largest working Tall Ship on the west coast. First launched in 1924 as a racing yacht, the 127-foot Schooner Zodiac has been fully restored for cruising the waters of the Pacific Northwest.

John Straley is the author of six novels. His first, The Woman Who Married a Bear, won the 1993 Shamus Award for best first novel. His sixth, Cold Water Burning, was short- listed for the Shamus Award for the best novel of 2001. Straley is a criminal investigator, an oral historian, and is currently the Writer Laureate of Alaska. His work has been featured on “Fresh Air with Terry Gross” and “CBS Sunday Morning.” He will be signing copies of his latest book and they will be available for sale onboard.

Pods of orca whales, soaring bald eagles, racing porpoises and curious harbor seals are just a few of the creatures you may encounter on this voyage. Hearty, delicious meals are served by the Zodiac's experienced crew, and you'll sleep on board in the ships' quarters.

John Straley Book

The Big Both Ways is the first book of fiction published by  Alaska Northwest Books®  Available May 2008

It’s 1935 and an ex-logger, a beautiful blonde female union anarchist, her 10 year-old niece and a yellow bird are rowing a dory up the Inside Passage from Puget Sound to Alaska with union men out for revenge and a dogged detective from Seattle in pursuit. In his first novel in seven years, Straley incorporates actual events and real places to create a gripping period crime story that pays homage to Raymond Chandler’s gritty detective stories and John Dos Passos’s evocative U.S.A. trilogy.
