Queen Charlotte Islands The Queen Charlotte Islands are remote and provide an unparalleled natural history. Experience - amazing wildlife, old-growth rainforests, hot springs, and ancient Haida native villages. The rich waters support a wonderful variety of whales and thousands of seabirds. Located 60 miles off the coast, on the edge of the continental shelf, these isolated islands have developed unique plants and animals, and the name "Canadian Galapagos". For thousands of years the Queen Charlotte Islands have been inhabited by the Haida, an indigenous population. The carvings, totem poles and ancient Haida villages are part of what attracts people from all over the world. There are more original standing totem poles here than anywhere on the coast. Fortunately, the southern islands are now protected by the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve.
